i heard it through the grapevine - the slits 1979
i have a love/hate relationship with cover songs. there’s a fine line between doing an original cover and rendering a song unrecognizable from the original. and of course there are safe note for note covers, some of which can be good or make you wonder what the point was. i heard it through the grapevine has been covered many times, but this is definitely my favorite version.

bullet - misfits 1978
i am a big misfits fan though i don’t listen to them nearly as much as i used to. i remember how i could not wait to get my hands on static age, their elusive, unreleased debut album. when the boxed set was finally released in winter of ‘96, we could hear the record as originally intended. i was so excited about it that i waited on the street on a cold winter night in front of generation records so i could get my copy and have it signed by every member (ever) of the band, minus danzig, of course. that brings back fond memories of when you actually had to go to a record store to get music and some things were impossible, or near impossible to get, sometimes i miss the chase, oh well.

(white man) in hammersmith palais - the clash 1978
almost posted a song from sandinista, but i decided to start at the source. this track was not included on the original release of their self titled debut, but put out as a single the following year. it was then included on the u.s. release a year later. (white man) in hammersmith palais was the first clue that the clash was not just going to be another punk rock band. one of my all-time favorite clash songs and one of the first songs known to fuse punk and reggae.
